What is G20?
The Group of Twenty, or G20, is an international forum composed of the world’s 20 largest economies, represented by their leaders and heads of state, as well as representatives from the European Union and international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. The G20 was established in 1999 in response to the growing need for a platform that brings together the world’s major economies to discuss global economic and financial issues in a more inclusive manner than traditional forums like the G7.
The origin of the G20 dates back to the Asian financial crisis of 1997 and the Russian financial crisis of 1998, which highlighted the need for greater international cooperation to deal with economic and financial crises. The permanent members include the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States. The European Union is also represented in the G20.
